On behalf of the Government of India, Acting High Commissioner Mr. Saifullah Khan handed over a consignment of 100,000 doses of Made in India Covishield (AstraZeneca) vaccines to Honourable Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Retired) Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama at the Nadi International Airport.

Also present at the ceremony were Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Ifereimi Waqainabete, Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing Hon. Inia Seruiratu, Permanent Secretary for Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Yogesh Karan, Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Mr. James Fong, Commissioner West, Mr. Mesake Ledua, General Manager Airports Fiji Limited, Mr. Isei Tudreu and other senior Government officials.

These vaccines are supplied by GOI through grant assistance as a special gesture of friendship and solidarity with the people of Fiji. This is in keeping with India’s stated commitment to use India’s vaccine production and delivery capacity to help partner countries in the fight against COVID pandemic.

India has, so far, provided over 63 million doses of vaccines to 76 countries and to UN health peacekeepers and workers, as part of its Vaccine Maitri (Vaccine Friendship) initiative, as gifts and on commercial basis as well as through GAVI’s COVAX facility.

India and Fiji share longstanding partnership based on mutual respect, cooperation and cultural ties. Fiji is an important partner for realizing the Indo-Pacific vision that envisages a free, open and inclusive region in a common pursuit of progress and prosperity.
