Indian diaspora in Fiji:- Fiji is a major diaspora country with more than one-third of population of Indian origin, mostly descendants of the Girmits (indentured laborers) who were brought in during the late 19th to early 20th century to work in the Sugarcane farms. Indians were first introduced to Fiji in the 1880s and between 1879 and 1916 over 60,000 indentured labourers came from various parts of India to work in the cane plantations. These were complemented by the later arrival of Gujarati and Punjabi immigrants. Hindi is one of the three official languages of Fiji. Indian culture, music, culture and art are very popular in Fiji.

Number/Profile including their growth, shift in social status/employment/ education: -The total population of Indians in Fiji is 316,081 which is about 33% of the total Population of Fiji. Fiji has a small but growing Indian expatriate (approx. 2200) population. These are mostly professionals such as Doctors, Professors, IT specialists, Accountants, Sales and Marketing executives, etc. A number of them are working in the University of University of South Pacific, Fiji National University. Several Indian doctors have also been employed by the Government Hospitals here. Most of the expatriates are working in local companies owned by Gujarati businessmen.
