73rd Republic Day of India - 26.01.2022

The High Commission of India in Suva celebrated the 73rd Republic Day of India on 26 January, 2022 at India House (Suva) today morning. This year’s Republic Day celebration is special in that it comes in the 75th year of Independence currently being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).The event commenced with the unfurling of the National flag by High Commissioner His Excellency P. S. Karthigeyan followed by the National Anthem of India. Thereafter, the High Commissioner read out excerpts from the address of Honorable President of India to the nation on the eve of Republic Day.

In his message to the nation, the Honorable President of India underlined the sacrifices of the great freedom fighters who helped achieve India's independence and extolled the citizens to re-discover the valuesthat animated the glorious national movement of India.The President further emphasized that rights and duties are two sides of the same coin and that the observance of the Fundamental Dutiesmentioned in the Constitution by the citizen creates the proper environment for enjoyment of Fundamental Rights.

In his message the High Commissioner underlined the special relations between India and Fiji and also other Pacific Island Countries and stated that it is a matter of great satisfaction to see the relations growing from strength to strength despite the pandemic related challenges. He urged all stakeholders to contribute wholeheartedly to further strengthen the relation and take it to greater heights.

During the event, the High Commissioner also launched the books ‘Fiji keKavi Muhammad Yusuf kaKavya: Srijanevam Drishti’, which is a collection of 170 poems composed by renowned Fijian poet, Mohammad Yusuf and ‘Indradhanush: Fiji ki Hindi Kahaniyaan’, a collection of stories of 15 Fijian writers,edited by Prof. SubashniLata Kumar, Lecturer in Fiji National University.

The COVID safe event was restricted to staff and family members of the High Commission of India in Suva and livestreamed on the Mission’s Facebook page for the wider community.
